Well, unfortunately I no longer have a B4 to experiment futher, but what doesn't work?
Like I said when I was trying to diagnose a problem in my '94 90 I swapped the head unit out of the '96 A6q and everything appeared to work...no codes were thrown or anything?
There's a good chance you're right, but, like I said, I've don't know what doesn't work.
The only things I know of that the unit needs to be recoded for is the different compressors.
Changing the last digit to a 1 instead of a 2 also will make the unit not look for a speed sensor on the AC clutch.

He's talking about a '98 A4 now, not a C4. The Nippondenso compressors were phased in...
...in '96. So depending upon what compressor the car the headunit came out of will determine how it's coded.

Well, regardless of what you're saying, the C4 unit I put in my B4 worked the...
...vent flaps properly.
But we're going in circles here, you said it won't work, I said it did when I tried.
Since you know all, you can be right at this one! ;-)
