Hey,
My alternator only charges at like 12 on the aux guage while the car is idling, then only goes up to 13.5 or so. This seems to happen when I have my lights on, and seems to coincide with wet conditions. I have STF, and some people have suggested new voltage regulators, but I wouldn't mind rebuilding the thing while I have it out. Does anyone know where I could source a rebuild kit for a 1990 cq?

Will that make any difference?
Another slight issue is that when I have my Ipod plugged in to the cig lighter, I get an alternator whine that varies with RPM, could that be a sign of a failing alternator.

The voltage reg has brushes. Those brushes rub on the alternators rotator shaft contacts, which are also probably worn. Not to mention the 6 diodes, may also be showing their age. You could possibly replace the VR, and still not fix the problem. Have you priced a VR for your alternator? I've found complete rebuilt alternators, for less than the VR alone. ;O)

these gauges can easily develop problems. Be sure to check the battery and alternator with a multi-meter before replacing anything. When my Jetta's alt. went dead I had the unit rebuilt in less than a day. I took it to R&L Repair in Bellevue, WA. He had a new rotor and VR in stock, new bearings and everything out the door for $100 even. That was a 100a Bosch unit that retailed for 200+. Find a local electrical repair shop and have them rebuild it.

Zone or any aftermarket parts place has them for way less. The Bosch unit hasn't changed much, cost isn't too bad, plus the lifetime warranty is always a plus. FYI, Zone's import alternators are rebuilt by Worldwide, which is a good company.
