I had my '88 90q up on the hoist the other day, and while spinning the rear wheels by hand (then turning the center driveshaft), the front wheels did not turn. I did have the car in neutral.
Can anyone explain how this was happening? I assumed the front and rears were connected all the time through the center diff... have I gotten things confused?

I had the car on the hoist in neutral... I know that the front and rear differentials are open (and I was actually playing around with the rear lock while it was up, because i'm making a new mounting bracket for the vacuum actuator).
All I was saying was that, while spinning the rear driveshaft (and hence spinning one year wheel... open diff), I wasn't spinning a front wheel. This says to me that when the car is in neutral, the front and rear drivelines aren't connected. So... in neutral, can you lock up one set of wheels (front or rear), and not load up the center differential? Am I right?
