Was driving and it just died. Coil is getting voltage and checks out with ohm meter but is not producing spark. Fuses all good. Engine cranks great, plenty of fuel. Timing belt ok.
1. Is there a simple way to read check engine light codes? The light does come on while cranking.
2. What is the typical failure in this case: Ingition amp, sensors on bellhousing, distributor sensor.
I have had this car for 16 years and keep it for winter driving. I call it the snow panzer and have no intention of getting rid of it.

Crank the engine for at least 5 seconds, and leave the key in the on position. Then pop a fuse into the fuel pump relay until the CEL starts blinking. Each blink is ~1sec, grouped in sets of four digits. Max number of blinks per digit is 4. So, you can have anything from 1111 to 4444. Between each is a 2.5sec pause IIRC.
The hall effect sensor in the distributor did NOT throw a code on my 5kq, which uses "the same" engine and ECU as your car. Just an FYI.
