coming from the front end of my B4 12v fwd. The best way I can think of to describe it would be the way it would sound if you had a mound of ball bearings or marbles that was rapidly cascading down. It doesnt happen every time I drive, but it does happen often, and only when I really get on the gas (in any gear). It lasts for several seconds and then goes away, or ends as soon as I let off the throttle a bit.
It doesnt sound like it is coming from the motor...It actually souns like its coming from somewhere around the drivers side wheel well, although its hard for me to tell while driving. I often times hear a "moaning" coming from that wheel as I am pull out of a parking spot and turning my wheel. I suspect already that my front wheel bearings are completely shot. Supposing this is true, could it be the cause of either or both of the noises I am hearing......the first sound I mentioned is VERY audible and obnoxious when it occurs. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!

I remember when I did have a bad joint (reason I replaced axel in the first place) and it sounded alittle different.
I might have been misleading in the description of the moaning sound though.
Actually, I could be stopped, with my wheels straight forward, and and as I slowly accelerate I hear the moaning. Also sometimes as I slow down for a traffic light I hear the moaning right before I come to a stop. Was it this sound alone that led you to say CV, or the other noise as well???? thanks

plate.
If nothing else, it sounds like you have a pad moving around in the caliper...and possibly a bent dust shield.

jack the car up to get the tire off the ground. Place a crowbar or similar under the tire and pull up hard to see if the wheel budges, its not a full proof check but its a good basic check. The wheel will move to the left and right slightly but it shouldnt have any up and down motion at all other then the shock compressing.
