Exhaust rattle from 1K - 3K RPMS....
I hear an extremely loud rattling sound from 1K - 3K RPMs. I'm thinking its just a clamp or something from when the shop put my custom exhaust on. Could this be a cat though? When the cats go bad, do they rattle all the time, or in certain RPM ranges? TIA.

They rattle at exacly the rpm range you have stated when they are about to give up the ghost. But that's only just the beginning, in time it will sound off all the time. Mine did just as you have stated and I changed it, no more rattle. How many miles have you got on it?

Smell?? Smell what??
If you are waiting for a smell you'll be waiting forever. Blown cat's don't emit a smell, just rattles at between 1k to 3k rpm. If you want to be sure if it's a cat, get a rubber mallet, get under the car and tap the cat. If you hear rattling noises, bye-bye cat. If you don't, check the rest of the exhaust system and the underside of the car.
