A few questions about setting the timing on the 3A...
<IMG SRC="http://audi.mtnre.com/public/3ATiming.gif">
Where the line is through the hole (just above the bottom of the hole on the flat spot), that is 6 degrees before TDC, correct?
(The 0 mark from the position is just above the top portion of the hole (at least form when we turned the crank by hand)].
The timing mark was too far up from the flat spot - meaning the timing was too far advance, right?
Also, out of curiosity, why is it necessary to remove the breather hoses and the cap on the evap canister?

Re: timing on the 3A...
The picture you posted shows the line used to set timing.
Your using a timing light?
Often folks do advance the timing, as some say the engine runs better(?). Maybe the previous owner had it advanced?
The breather hoses are removed because timing is effected by engine vacuum.

Well when I got the car the timing belt had lost a few teeth...
...so everything was out of wack.
The Bentley mentions setting the timing to 6 degrees before TDC and shows that flat line in the picture above. Is that not the 6-degrees before TDC mark? Further up from that mark is a 0 on the flywheel, so, we were assuming that's the 6-degree mark, no?
Yes we're using a timing light.

Excellent, thank you sir - the Bentley page I printed off cut off the diagram/note about the evap...
...canister plug - so I'm going to redo it tonight (only had the two breather hoses off). It drove really well last night - so we'll see if this tweaks it even more.
Did you have your 3A advanced any more than 6 degrees?

Once the cap was off the evap canister it was too far advanced - almost at the top of the window...
...adjusted it back down to the Bentley spec'd location.

I think we got it - it's running great now...it was way too far advanced... [edit]
...but who knows how dinked with it was due to the lost teeth on the timing belt/etc.
That car really has a lot of get-up and go - I'm really impressed for a 17 y/o car. Sure seems/feels faster than Stacey's '94 Honda Vivic EX (has the fancy vtech/top end engine in it - for whatever that's worth - its specs are better than the 2.0L - and it's a lighter car - I think it's in the gearing - and the fact that the VTEC engine develops power a lot higher in the rev. range).
Just have a few misc. pieces to buy and it'll be G2G!
