Default FMIC Stacking: Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Thoughts?

Instead of getting one HUGE FMIC, just how efficient would something like this be? (if you had the room for it)

Also, why is it nobody ever installs high flow-electric fans behind them, a la radiator styles, to pull air though them when they get too hot? or are there people that do so? we've seen misters, but I've never seen fans...

Just thinking out loud here...

Default what way is it going?

The turning arrow shows front first then back, the other arrows show back first...? Neither really makes much sense to me, the reduced airflow after the first IC alone would degrade performance on the IC #2, let alone the increasing air temp.

It is less than ideal, but it would still drop the IAT. However, you'd also increase pressure drop, and reduce airflow through the 2nd core, both of which would decrease the efficiency of the system. Like I said, less than ideal, but it would technically work, assuming you get the arrows to agree ;-)

I can see fans for when the car isn't moving very fast. Otherwise, I dunno...

Default from the great B5 S4 front mount vs Side mount intercooler debate there was one thing not argued

intercooler thickness over 1/2" does little to improve cooling efficiency compared with surface area.

IF that's true, then you've just created a very thick, inefficient intercooler with a 90 degree turn.

Now if you put them on top of one another, y'd them in and out, well it be interesting.

Default .

This book has a lot of good stuff on intercooler system design and theory. Get it and read it.

Stacking intercoolers isn't really worth it. You may gain a small bit of efficiency, but you lose flow and pressure. It's better to just get one intercooler that's properly sized for your car.

Default don't judge the idea by the size of the ICs in the pic... ...I just needed a pic for ref...

Ideally, you would've sat down, figured out how much cooling you'd need, then instead of 1 big IC, you decide to select 2 smaller ones with the appropriate flow for your application... ...that fit in the space infront of the motor behind the front grill, nice and high, tons of air-flow, etc, etc...

the fan idea would only be for city driving, or solo, or simply when they got hot they'd flip on to move a lot of air over them and get things back down... ...not an 'on all the time' setup.

okay, okay, what if it was two 1/2" IC stacked?

That be good if you went thru them in parallel instead of series.
