Found out why my heater sucked so bad...

What we have here are the doors that controls air direction and temp control in my 1988 90. What is missing from the doors is the foam insulation that covers those holes in the doors. In a nutshell, the second pic is the temp door. The myriad of holes was not condusive for directing the air to the heater core, hence lukewarm air at best and the colder it was outside, the colder the air from the vents. The first pic is one of 2 doors that direct the airflow to the various outlets; this one sends air to either the vents or the second door(second door is for defroster and floor vents, is smaller and has no holes).
The temporary solution is to wrap the doors with duct tape, thus blocking the holes and directing the air to the appropriate location. This can be done without pulling the HVAC unit apart but it is a pain in the rump(as if pulling the stinking dasboard out was not a big enough pain).
Does anyone have a more permanent fix without trying to find a new HVAC box? Is there a source for the foam insulation for the doors? Should I just leave the duct tape on the doors and fegettaboutit?
Any thoughts?

Re: Is the foam supposed to be solid , and cover the ports?

Or is it supposed to flap open when the blower is running? Then what is the significance of the ports?
