so ever since ive head the car, the fuel level sender would not reed the correct amount. it would read when the tank was full, and about 100 miles in to it, it would drop off and tell me that im running on empty... well, earlier last week i ran out of gas on my way home. did some ding around and found an article on some of the causes on here (i think it here in archives for like an A4 or something) anyways, got a new gasket ordered for the fuel pump before i tore it apart (usually you cant get the pump back in with the old one) took the fuel pump out and found out that one of the wires is completely broken off in the middle. replaced the wire, cleaned the contact area, and all is well now :-)
just felt like shearing this for someone who maybe having a similar problem

Gee... kinda makes me wonder if that chopped wire might have sparked a bit when the frayed ends would touch hitting bumps...
That would have the potential to throw a downer into your day, wouldn't it?

A spark submerged in gasoline won't do anything, there needs to be air present, that's why Crazy Russian mentioned fumes. But yeah there's not enough current......
I had to do the same repair on mine. And when I asked the PO he said he had to do it once himself too! When I did it, I used a longer wire and looped it, let's see if that helps it last longer. :fingers crossed:

You the man crazy russian. Saved me some much need cash, and no wait! Was just about to buy a new sender, never even thought to try and fix the old one. Thanks for the *very* detailed info!
Now I just need some new wood trim for my door panels and my '95 Audi 90 will be damn near perfect.

Sorry, no. I was in a hurry to solder it as quickly as possible and didn't think about it until I had it buttoned up. I had 1/2 a tank of gas still in the car, and gas fumes make me paranoid. ![Wink](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Just fixed a wiring fault in the driver airbag as well (bad igniter harness), glad I'm done with deal with these little 'land mines.' Especially after reading all the horror stories relating to both.
