Hi all--this is my first post to AudiWorld, although I've been around fourtitude and vwvortex for awhile. I've been lurking here for awhile as well, and now have my first problem with my newish 80.

Patient: 1991 80 Quattro

Problem: Very loud whining noise (much louder than the normal fuel pump noise) coming from the rear drivers side while driving, accompanied by gradual reduction in power, until I couldnt even accelerate from a stop sign on flat ground. I turned the car off, and then back on, since I was only a block from home, and fignered I could glide it into a parking spot, and the problem went away (no noise, power back to normal).

My guess: Bad fuel pump? I have a new fuel filter, but havnt installed it yet (Ive had the car less than 3 weeks). I'm guessing this due to the very loud noise coming from the rear (not dependant on speed, or anything else), and I was able to search 1 post that seemed to agree with my diagnosis...

Do yall agree? And if it is the fuel pump, is it straightforward, as Herr Bentley seems to imply, or are there any potential snags?

agree, fuel pump, change filter with it

I think the B3 Sedan fuel pump is located on the driver's side underneath the car near the fuel filter. Can someone clarify?

Quattro B3 may be different, but B3 fwd is near passenger rear door. for what it's worth.

quattro is same place on driver side
