The fuel pump debate: Had a long talk with a Bosch rep and...
...running your car out of gas most CERTAINLY causes premature fuel pump death. I know some of you have stated that a fuel pump on a bench test will run w/out problems, but I can't imagine how. I watched a rep (and he does this for training at seminars every day) put a brand new out-of-the-box pump on a bench and ran it for 2 minutes. Yes, the pump still worked, but at about 15%, and it was so hot, you couldn't even touch it. He pointed out that this was a pump made w/ metal rollers, and it died completely at minute 5.
He then put a brand new pump on the bench, this one made w/ plastic rollers (the new trend) and it was 100% fried in 48 seconds. The "rollers" were completly melted.
I know there's some debate, but I guess I consider this info "from the horses mouth." Who knows...but my experience makes me a 100% believer.

What the rep said is true, but...
That's without any fuel flowing through the pump to cool it. Now I don't know about you, but once the pump is bone dry...you aren't going to be running anywhere for even 48 seconds.
The fact is, that sure on a stand with zero fuel to pass through the pump, you can burn it up. In real world application however, you'll almost never run into that situation.

I remember the post. That's why I'm saying..
If he was running fuel through them, then I can understand...the fuel kept it cool, whether submerged in it or not...fuel is still the caveat. But with none in the tank, and none going through .. a.k.a. "out of gas", it fries it in seconds.
Wasn't the debate whether running a 90 out of gas causes fuel pumps to die prematurely? My vote, (and I'm certainly no expert..but my eyes have seen...) is most certainly yes...it does. Especially if you have a pump made w/ plastic rollers.

Not exactly...
If you run out of gas, flat out, your engine won't be running 48 seconds after the pump sees the last of the fuel. Engine not running means pump not on.
You could keep flicking the car on and off trying to restart which would initiate the pump to try to pressurize the fuel system, but that's about it.

True, point taken. In my case, I was on I-25 a.k.a. the "death trap", and had no choice but to
try as hard as I could to get to the shoulder, which in turn made it sputter for quite a little bit before it was totally out...plenty of time (knowing now) for it to fry the little bastage. A day and a half later...total crap-out.
Better safe than sorry I guess. To be clear, I guess it would be best said that; under certain cicrumstances, running out can and will do damage.
