I've had this problem since I got the car 50,000 miles ago, but it's gotten a lot worse recently. Whenever the rpms pass through 3000-3100 on acceleration in any gear, there is a very strange noise and feeling in the gas pedal. It sounds like a whooshing, except with a metallic kind of sound. Some times it is louder than others. Today it was real bad, i could hear it really loud with my windows open whenever i passed through that RPM range. It seems to be worse sometimes. For example, occassionally I will come to a stop and the engine will be a little rough. When I have it in neutral and rev the engine, the engine sputters and shakes at first. When I put it in gear and try to go, there is more sputtering and hesistation providing a nonsmooth acceleration. Whenever this happens (and it seems to randomly), the noise at 3000-3100 rpms is much worse.

Any ideas?

prolly a vac leak, any sounds at idle?

It's most predominant when the rpms fall and set back to idle.
