Default Re: Hey Alex...

Howdy! I am not sure which of the 80tq I may have mentioned, there are several on the web which have good websites outlining their setups. My 80t was a FWD, 2.0 4 cylinder, 8.5:1 pistons, GTi head, ATP EM, Garrett T3 turbo, and so on. This poor fellow was burned by a leaking exhaust pipe at the turbo, details at: <a href="http://www.uvm.edu/~avangerb/Audi/Engine.html">'88 80 Turbo</a>

For the 10v turbo 80/90tq setups check out Javad's site, Nate's Site, and Jim's site.

<a href="http://www.80tq.com/">Javad's</a>
<a href="http://www.newtsplace.com/~newt/90tq/">Nate's</a>
<a href="http://geocities.com/jeg1976/conversion_home.html">Jim's</a>

If you need more information on these conversion just let me know.

Cheers!

Default 01E Transmission & more

<center><img src="http://home.adelphia.net/~markw99/images/engine.jpg"></center><p>Current pricing I've seen for an 01E is around $12k, used. It's a great tranny that'll take the power, but it isn't one for the road. Most of them had ratio's of 3.5/2.273/1.706/1.318/1.040/.889 These are great for racing, but very road unfriendly. I speak from experiece on this one. Also with that much power, you'll be looking at solid motor mounts, anything else will get ripped to pieces. So forget about any sort of sound system, you won't be needing that anymore. You really don't want to bore the motor out that far, being going to a stroker crank you can get it up to 2.5L, which should do you just fine. By taking away metal you risk heat warping problems, that motor is going to generate enough heat as it is, without a turbo, add a turbo, and youll have major heat nightmares. Now you're talking bigger rad, and cooling ducts, forget about A/C. To avoid detonation and burning the motor to bits, you'll be looking at running C12, which is currently around $5.05/gal. It also is leaded so forget the cat's, and being road legal. At 450HP, you can also expect to get maybe 3 mpg, so it'll suck lots of fuel too. And don't forget the fully synthetic oil, to take the stress. Redline is going for around $9/qt these days. And remember, with putting all that money in the motor, you'll want to change it very often to keep it together, like every few hundred miles. A good motor can cost you up to $45K to build, then add a tranny, and all the rest of the bits and pieces, you're talking about some serious investment.

It's nice to dream about having a lot of HP, but there is a cost, upfront in putting it all together, and then after, in having a beast of a car, which is expensive to maintain. But it sure is a lot of fun.

Default Not necessarily

It isn't going to knock your socks off though. Other than the Rally prep, it's not too far from stock. It's been for sale since Sept.

I think George Plsek still has his Audi for sale. Check Tatomotorsports.com<ul><li><a href="http://www.libraracing.com/audi.htm">Also Here</a></li></ul>

Default Re: 01E Transmission & more

Howdy! The 01E's are far less than $12k used, was recently offered RS2 transmissions sub $5500 with less than 90k km on them, fully resealed and with S4/6 tailhousing if needed. We can retail new 01E's for far less than $12k as well, shipping is a might bit pricey though. There are many road friendly 01E transmissions, the RS2, S4tt, RS4, and so forth are all very roadworthy and happy to handle some high bhp ranges.

Running 450bhp out of an AAN is not a total pipe dream, though it does cost some major loot. I would not bother stroking the engine or boring it out, it's all about stronger, lighter, stouter internals, proper fueling, proper cooling, proper intercooling, very high octane gas, and tons of boost. This may make it sound easy, but it is far from easy and far from cheap, plus drivability issues do come in when shooting for the high numbers. There is a Yahoo group that chats about ringing major bhp levels from the 20vt engines, worth looking around for that as they have some members running major numbers.

Cheers!

Default But...

It doesn't make sense

Everything you say is exactly right . However because I am obviously biasedtowards the V6, I have to say if big power is your goal the V6 should be reconsidered. People dismiss it way to easily. I find it very funny when people sit there with a perfectly capable 2.8 liter engine talking dreamily about poping in a 2.2 liter engine, or maybe building it up to a 2.5 liter engine. Wow, you already have a 2.8L engine, with an extra cylinder, that can easily be 2.9 liters or even bigger. For the same amount it would cost you to swap in a 5cyl turbo engine you can get 300 Hp out of your V6. For under 10,000$ you can turn your V6 into a 500 horsepower monster, along with all that great transmission killing torque available from the extra displacement. I am not trashing the 5cyl engines at all they are great, I just think if high horsepwer is the goal, $ for $ and HP for HP the V6 is a better platform to start with, ESPECIALLY since you already own the engine.

Default 01E's ..

If you can find an 01E with the racing innerds for less than $12k, that's a steal! Mine was over $20K new
The dollars and pain grow exponentially with the increase in HP.
I am between 300-400HP(after the latest rebuild, I need an AWD dyno to do some further testing), with a non-turbo motor, and I can vouch for what it takes to keep and drive one.

Great advice...good to know even if you aren't planning anything immediate(like me).
