...I heard this "clanking" noise, it was idling fine, just noisy (the tensioner bits banging around under the timing belt cover). As soon as I heard that I turned the car off and towed it home - didn't drive it at all. Also the belt still appears to have tension on it (water pump and the other roller seemed to have kept the tension). So I'm hoping no valve damage was done, we'll find out once I get the timing belt tools (<a href="http://www.samstagsales.com/images/vw_matra_3242.jpg">3242</a> + <a href="http://www.samstagsales.com/images/vw_matra_3243.jpg">3243</a>)

...the tensioner was old, doesn't look "new" like the belt/H20 pump.
I'm going to do the Timing Belt/H20 pump/tensioner/roller/t-stat myself...might as well learn, have two cars with the same engine!
