Help! Dash gear indicator on drive, but car is in park.....
Been lurking for a while. I think my first post.
91 Audi 80 with dreaded automatic trany. I bought it with 50K and it's now got 74K. No problems until today when I tried to start it. Everything works (radio/AC etc) but it didnt want to start. Thats when I noticed the dash gear indicator was on drive and the car was in park. Does this sound like a busted trany or something else?
Thanks

Probably the sensor which tells this display what gear it's in...
...if the car thinks it's in drive, it won't start.
Have you tried putting the car/ignition to the "on" position and tried moving the shifter through the gears? (from P all the way down to 1 and back up)?

Yes, I did try that. It would not register any moves I made with the shifter. Can you tell me more about the sensor I need to get and where it is located?

I've never owned a B-chassis car with an automatic, so I don't know what controls the display...
...I don't know if t's the back-up light/ac kick down switch or the multi-function switch. Perhaps someone that knows B3 automatics can/will chime in.

Well I know you can't blink/clear the airbag computer without a VAG-COM...
...I think the blink code system only works for the ECU. If I get bored later I'll check in my Bentley...

It's now working...........
I tried starting the car this morning and it worked. That to me is more scary because it's my daily driver to NYC and that would be the pits if this intermittent problem struck after work. It's off to my independent Audi mechanic on Monday, unless someone has an idea. Will post follow up.

A fuse was replaced....
This forum moves quick.
My mechanic (Dealer Alternative NJ) replaced a fuse and the problem has not returned. He mentioned it could be a $300 sensor. He ordered the part but didnt need to install since the problem stopped. Worst case the car gets towed and the sensor gets installed.....
Thanks for the help.
