Hood latch broken on Audi CQ. Help?

Hood latch broken on Audi CQ. Help?
Today I was going to bring my CQ out of hibernation mode and the first thing I need to do is install a battery.
When I pulled the hood release, a clip pulled out from a piece of sheet metal and it basically broke apart in my hand!!! The hood pull handle still swings but there is too much play in the cable to open it fully.
I got a C clamp around the cable between the firewall and the hood pull handle and pulled on that, but I only managed to open up the passenger side of the hood. I can't seem to pull the cable out any further. The hood release is not coming out from the driver's side spring loaded plunger...
Any ideas?
