Default How does your CQ/90 fair in the snow vs. others?

how well does the quattro in these cars compare to other vehicles? is it more similar to newer AWD systems or closer to open-diff 4WD systems in trucks?
im an avid skier and make several trips to Vermont each winter, but its usually in the family Mercury Mountaineer and my last car was a vw corrado so that never stood a chance in VT. but this year i have every intention of bringing the CQ up north. what can i expect from it when the weather gets nasty?
thanks

Default my cq was the best car i ever had in the snow

drive it like you have some sense and have good tires on it and you'll be fine. The short wheel base and the low center of gravity mixed with the lack of low end torque make it hard to mess up unless you try. Very controlable at the limit, with practice, you can oversteer and drift the car on demand in the snow. That is really one of the easiest ways to steer the car sometimes, with the gas pedal. Lock the rear diff and the thing will plow through snow that drags the bottom bits of the car. My S4 is good in the snow, but no where near as good as my cq was, mostly due to the turbo and the extra power. Once my car gets boost, it gets no traction.

Default Best ever - my 5kq w/diffs locked.

The CQ isn't bad with M+S tires though, I've even had to drive it in snow/ice on the summer sticky tires. Had to park it with the gas pedal. No joke.

Default Amazing!

It grips like no tomorrow. Much better then a typical 4wd truck.

It won't go through 2 ft of snow like my big diesel with the locking rear end will. But then again the truck has mass and inch deep lugs on the tires too.

But it's very stable and well behaved and will tackle the slippyness quite well. The nice part is having it there all the time figuring out what wheels to send torque to.

Default

They're only ok. 1st gen > 2nd gen quattro. Get a 4kq or 5kq/5ktq instead

Default I was keeping up with my brother in law

he was driving a 01 Yukon XL with brand new mud/snow tires. my only limit was clearance. I chained up the rear and turned on the diff lock. I was also pulling a couple of kids in a sled. I'm sure if I chained up all 4 it would be a helovalot better. I also didn't have my skid pan on under the engine (big mistake) oil filter got beat pretty badly.

Default My coupe has lived in Vermont winters for 4 years....

and never been stuck...except once when I tried to turn off a main road into a driveway that had a 3 foot snow bank in front of it.

Default My b3 90 sedan is better in the snow than my truck. And the locking diff has....

gotten me out of alot of "snowed in" parking spots. Obviously, deep deep snow is a different story due to lack of ground clearance(like a truck) but as far as traction goes, the 90 is awesome!

Default I got stuck twice with my 4000.........

both times due to depth of snow.
1st time - Lake Tahoe-I tried to use the 4000 like a snow plow and it did not work. Snow was 2-3 feet deep. I had to shovel to get out.
2nd time - Brian Head, Utah, I pulled into an unplowed parking lot. Too much snow. I got unstuck without getting out of the car, just by going back and forth(locked diff.) from 1st gear to reverse.
