How to separate tie rod from strut housing?

I asked this question last week, but I don't think I was quite clear about what I was asking, so I've attached a picture. It's the step in the Bentley where it says press off tie rod end on page 40.12 and shows a picture of some kind of press.
So, how do I separate these two so I can get the strut assembly out? I tried using a pry bar to no avail, lots of lube. I tried jacking up the control arm, didn't work, tie rod just came with the strut housing even though I had removed the nut on top of it.
Two more questions - do I need to remove the hub as per the bentley just to change the strut mount, and where can I buy a slotted nut tool?
Thanks.

You can purchase a tie rod seperator from a parts store, also referred to as a pickle fork. Or you can take a big hammer and hit the bar where the stud to the ball joint goes through. If you look close at it just below the stud there are a few marks or gouges there already. That is where you want to make contact with the hammer. Normall takes a few good hits to get it to seperate.

Get one of these gear pullers from an auto-parts store. Can also be used when tightening nut, as shown in pic.

of the steering arm (or pull the steering arm off of the tie-rod stud. It is a PULLer, after all).

I STFA and only found info on mkaing your own slotted nut tool from a socket. All I have is a Dremel and I don't think that will work. Where can I buy or rent a slotted nut tool? I went to the Zone, and the girl there acted like I was retarded when I told her I needed a slotted nut tool.
