Default Hydraulic lifters: how long can they last if starting to tick a lot,and can they fail completely?

I hear them on every start up, which is not too bad, but if I push the car hard they'll get louder. This past weekend, after my last Auto-x run they were real loud, you could hear them from 15 feet away.

I run 10w30 Syntec and I know I could run thicker oil and 1/2q over full but I don't think that's a great solution. But, if I was to do so, how long can they last and can they fail completely and cause more damage? I could go ahead and do the job but I'd rather not as this motor will go out of this car end of summer anyways.
I-5 20v in question. 230K kms or ~142K miles.

Default Should run a thicker oil...

Seeing how the spec is 20w-50... it'll quiet them down a bunch.

I've had noisy lifters in various vw's and audi's for years.... they never fail... just tick louder.

Keep the oil at or slightly above the fill line. If it is low, they will tick more.

The lifters ticked loudly in my '88 80q for 9 years and 180,000 miles. Don't worry about it. I sold the car recently with over 360,000 miles on it with the ticking lifters, and the engine ran as strong and smoothly as the day I got it...

I tried 20w 50 once, I didn't like it....maybe I'll give it another try.

Default Overfilling can cause excessive crankcase pressure. I'd try the correct oil first (15w-50)...

And if you're bothered by it after autocross runs, just keep the idle elevated, around 1500 or 2000 rpm, for a few seconds after your run. The resulting increased oil pressure will cure the tick.

Over filling is also detrimental to the operation of your cats (if you have them) and your O2 sensor
