Default I-5 fuel mileage

I've got an '88 Audi 80q that I use for many of my highway drives, including the trek I made from South Carolina to upstate NY today.

I've been getting 27 to 29 mpg with this car on the highway (75-80mph) on regular unleaded (I'll jump up a grade if I start to ping), 15W50 Mobil 1, K&N filter, Bosch Plus 4 plugs, Michelin X-Ones.

Is this normal fuel mileage for 80q's and 90q's? 'Cause I am pretty impressed with a 13 year old car with all-wheel drive delivering nearly 30 MPG.

My '85 4kq would get around 26 mpg (under 70mph) to 24 mpg (over 75mph).

I'm just curious as to everybody else's experience. I'm not complaining, since being able to travel 450+ miles between fillups can definitely cut travel times!

Default Thats about right...

mileage wise IMHO. Maybe just a tad bit low...

As far as the pinging goes, you'll probably never hear it! Your car has a wonderful fuel management system that will make sure you don't. Can you say Retard? Your engine canYou're losing performance using the cheaper gas...

Also your old Audi 4000 probably got less MPG because it was not very aerodynamic. Ever try to get a 4000 over 115MPH? Much easier in the more aerodynamic 5000's...

13 year old Audi are awesome

Default On my last trip...

through the mountains in Colorado, I got about 30 mpg. That's with a '90 coupe 20V with 133k miles on it. These old I-5's are amazing. My '97 A4 2.8 doesn't even get close.
So, I would say your numbers are pretty much in the ballpark.

Well, obviously my brainpower pales in comparison to yours, but it seems to me that my car is performing just fine. I didn't see too many stoplights in my 950 mile drive yesterday (nor in most of my driving, for that matter), so I'm not all that concerned about off-the-line speed. I've also never seen any discernable difference in fuel mileage between gas grades.

Premium fuel typically sells for $.20 more than regular unleaded. I used approximately 34 gallons of fuel yesterday (all unleaded regular, with no knocking despite quite a bit of hilly driving in Pennsylvania).

So, the way I see it, I saved approximately $6.80 on fuel expenses.

Somehow, I don't think this quite qualifies me as retarded. My priorities are for cost-effective, sustained highway cruising, not eeking out one or two horsepower so that I can pretend to be a man at stoplights.

So, for future reference, opinions are welcomed. Insults are best left for riceboys and BMW owners.

(Actually I thought that the 'retard' remark was rather funny. I just wanted to take the high road in my response.)

Default Lighten up...

I don't think Stephen was even trying to imply that you are a retard, but rather referring to your engine's fuel management. Let's not get all bent out of shape; we're all friends here!

I think it has something to do with summertime?

Temps are high as a tempers!

Saving $6.80 on gas in 950 miles is not much to celebrate about.......

Look at the 40 cents a gallon in tax were paying!
Get that dropped, and there's something to celebrate!

Default LOL........

I've been around this forum long enough to know that Stephen didn't call you a retard!!

He was just saying that if your car starts to ping it will AUTOMATICALLY "retard" the timing.

Read his message again with this in mind.....it's all in how you take it!!

Hey, wait a minute here. I think we all need to lighten up. I was pretty sure that the post script to my reply would let everyone know that I was feigning offense:

(Actually I thought that the 'retard' remark was rather funny. I just wanted to take the high road in my response.)

Stephen dropped me a note to clear up any misunderstanding. So, everything is cool.

Now, regarding the taxes on gas, I don't know what can be done about that. Personally, I think that it's the PROFITS on gas that are killing us.
