I grind second while downshifting

if I try to downshift going faster than ~40, even if I keep the clutch in.
Am I just a retard for downshifting too soon? (even if I'm not letting the clutch out), or is something wrong?

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/6607/gears1.jpg"></center><p>Your looking at around $2000 to repair them syncro's!
Personally I dont think its your syncro's at all!
The 5 speed in your car is very well engineered!
I say its the transmission mounts, front snub mount & or shift linkage worn or out of adjustment.
Before you go "financing" a gearbox R&R, make sure the above mentioned items are good. They are
easily changed. Cost much less too!

I replaced my 2nd gear synchro when i was doing the g/b & diff bearings, because it had the same symptoms, and now its all good. Let me guess, when you give it heaps of revs in first and change to second, it grinds as well?
However, as Mik said, do the easy/cheap stuff first and see what happens, i just changed the synchro first as that was the cheapest method while i had the g/b apart for other reasons.

Howdy! I have to agree with the synchro estimate, though not discounting the need to check mounts and linkage first. I've run into several FWD 80/90's with grinding 2nd gears, actually more FWD than quattro in my experience. My old 80t had a crunchy 2nd when cold, rebuild linkage and brand new mounts. The best thing to consider is does it crunch when cold, when first getting, and then lessen as the car gets warmer, does it go away? If it does then it's an internal problem, if it does not go away or lessen at all with temperature and driving time then it's probably linkage.
Cheers!

Thanks for the reassurance, the forums are lucky to have such knowledgable people!
I can get on first hard, shift second fast, and it catches just fine.

try to match your rev's...kinda like heel-and-toe'ing, but not quite. by matching revs via quazi H&T'ing, i don't have to use my clutch pedal at all to shift up or down. only time i'd have to touch it is from a standstill. tranny doesn't grind at all with a near perfect rev match with the clutch pedal. without, don't force it or it will definately grind ![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
it's gonna take a lot of practice for me to be able to bypass the clutch with any sort of regularity...
