for the temperatures where I live. You can be stuck hours at a time in a Dallas traffic jam - creeping forward inches, stop, creep, stop.... with the air temp over 100 F and 20 degrees higher on the concrete.
I'd say that local temps have a lot to do with what you chose to use.

I also agree, that's why I use a combo of Mobil 1 10w-30 and 15w-50 along with the enlarged oil filter;-)

Audi didn't like it At All! I use 10w40 year round, and have no immediate intention to change. Perhaps Mobile 5W40 (is that a type?) Synthetic, but that's after I save up for a few years =P Besides, if I switch to Synth I might dislodge all the goo & she'll start leakin again, and I only just got her to stop, so.....

When I bought the car back in January I started off running 10W30 in my 90 but had a problem with valve clatter after autocrossing/hard driving. Switched to Chevron Delo 15W40 at the last oil change and the clattering problem has gone away. It appears to be using/leaking less oil too.
I'd like to try a synthetic oil but with 140k on the motor I'm a little wary about causing leaks if I switch. However if someone has a car with less miles I'd highly recommend trying RedLine synthetic oil. I've been using it in my Miata for the last 160,000 miles (with 190,000 total miles on it) and not only is the car not burning oil, there is no measurable wear in the cylinders at all.

Here in Australia 20W/50 is on the thicker side of acceptable, but it's ok, because it gets 'ken hot over here.
Personally I use 15W/50 in whatever brand will sell that grade in a full synthetic. Unfortunately lately here in Aus I've noticed that the synthetics seem to be getting thinner eg. 5w/40, 5w/50. Not sure if it matters, but there you go.
My advice is to check your handbook and use the grade it lists for your climate.
