happened to me once. I had my tire pathced by the local chino's for like $5 and they put it on backwards. I had some uneven wear as well. Rotating the tires after that was weird to. Had to send that one to back for sure.

But all the tires on the car should be the same, so if you put the 'white wall' inside, for instance, all tires should be mounted the same way.
Some tires are uni-directional and should only be mounted one way. You cannot switch these tires from side to side on your car, because that results in the treads being 'backwards'. However, these are in the minority.
Most tires have no ~direction~ to the tread.

- under all circumstances. There should be an arrow on the sidewalls showing the correct rotation of the tire when driving forwards. That is the only way that uni-directional tires should ever be mounted and used.

And if there is a denomination for left and right, make sure those match up. I am pretty sure the people who balanced wouldve known, but they couldve been some ignorant mouth breathers as well.

Were they remounted on the rims or just rotated? Even a tire without directional sensative tread can give you lot of trouble if its remounted in the opposite direction. The outside of thire should remain the outside of the tire for its life. The reason is the plys "set". Mounting them in reserve stresses the tire and you have a high likelihood of herniating a ply, ouch!
The best investment I ever made with my Audis was finding an extra set of rims and having a set of winter and summer tires that are properly marked.
It also allows you to run better tires for both winter and summer conditions. All-season tires are usually a bad compromise.
