It started last fall for like a month and then happened two or three times this spring. The tach starts to bounch or just drop and read zero. Could this be the same problem??? Also once last fall when the tach started bounching, it down shifted (automatic) and had to pull the car over, restart and everything has been peache ever since... Could this be related???
Sorry for jumping in on your post and thanks for the info...

Since it downshifted by itself, it could very well be...Have them check the sensor. They said the part is under $200....

When I bought the car less than a year ago, the dealer where I bought it from (non-Audi) told me that the instrument cluster was replaced at 53,xxx miles because it broke and there is a 1 yr warranty so the Audi dealer will replace. But I didn't like the idea at all that it broke so early and it happened again....pooor quality.
