IHI turbos??

Default IHI turbos??

SO I browsed around my local yard today looking for a good turbo for my 80t project. I decided to keep my budget to a minimum and since the yard is filled with turbo cars and they cost me...well, let's just say not very much, I set out to look for a god one. Does anyone know whether IHI turbos (used on 87-88 Thurderbird) are the same mounting flange as a Garrett? I want to say yes, but I'm not sure. Is going with a water/oil cooled turbo really going to make that big of a difference, as most of the older Garretts are just oil cooled.

I've got about 20 turbos out there to choose from, and there's several Merker/T-bird Garrett T3s and IHI's out there in very good shape. The turbo from that Volvo 760 appeared to be a T3 too, and also was in good shape but had excess oil in it (bad seal maybe??) What do you guys think?

I'd use an oil/water turbo. They tend to live longer (run cooler).

No matter which one you get, make sure you can get a rebuild kit for it. I tend to not trust junkyard turbos that are not rebuilt.

Default Why not a K-26?

Already water cooled and a fairly rugged, longlasting turbo.

Maybe even a smaller k-24 if you can find one used...

What car is this going on? You're not turbo charging the Duke are you?
