The sound is horrible, It sounds like a rock bouncing around in the upper part of the engine. The sound starts when the engine gets warmed up, but there is no sound at idle, only above approx. 1800 rpm. The engine had a valve job about 20k miles ago. Could it be the cam bearings, or any other bearings? Thanks

These do this after they get old. You don't even need the vacuum pump unless your doing some seriouse WOT left foot braking.

If the engines been oil starved, you probably have a rod knocking. If you really want to find out quickly, just rev the **** out of it and see if it blows up. Put a kitty litter pan under the oil pan to catch the rod when it shoots through the oil pan. Man thats fun.
No seriously, I don't think you want to do that. If the engine is actually running ok and you have good compression, you need to remove the oil pan and check the rods. Grab each rod cap and pull/push. You'll know if one's loose. I had a 72 F100 / 302 with three rods knocking. I ran Kendall strait 50 weight in it for about 12,000 miles and finally sold it. Damn, that was a good truck. (Edit - but Jim Greene has a god idea below - he's prolly right)

When speaking about engines in general, not just Audi engines which I know you're a good hand at, when oil viscosity thins under heat, it can make rod knock more apparent and certainly makes lifters a hell of a lot more loud. My 50 weight sure did calm my F100 down. Carry on, kind sir.

Take a long ratchet extension or broom handle and put it to your ear. Put it on the side of the block - listen. Put it on the top of the valve cover (somewhere) - listen. Wherever it's louder is where it's coming from. I wonder what would happen if you disconnect the knock sensor? My guess is if it runs better after you disconnect it it's coming from below the head, eh?
