Default K gents .. i need some input from the ones that are familiar with the 10 & 20 V turbo 5 cyl

i'll post this around in order to figure out what's needed for a plug and play for a standalone on these motors (i also have my share of info to input) :

Megasquirt will hopefully can put together a nicely priced kit (1/2 price of the 034 stuff- for starters as i am personally a huge fan of 034

"
1. What year/make/model/engine/tranny? (Pretend your at the parts
store,
ordering a starter.) If this isn't the original engine/electronics let
me know that too.
2. Are you looking to control fuel only, ignition only, or fuel and
ignition?
3. What are the engine details (type, number of cylinders, previously
fuel injected or carb'd?)
4. What type of ignition system does your car run- where is the crank
angle sensor (CAS) or distributor trigger wheel and what type is it
(Optical/LED Sensor? Hall Sensor? VR Sensor?)
5. How many teeth/windows/slots and what orientation does the CAS,
crank
trigger, and/or distributor wheel have? (any missing? all evenly
spaced?)
6. Is there a distributor? Single/Multiple Coils? Coil on Plug?
7. Does this engine have a fast idle valve? If so, how many wires are
connected to it? Do you know if it is an on/off, pulse width modulated,
thermal, or stepper type?
8. Rate yourself 1-5 on technical confidence in yourself. 1 being "I
can't paint by numbers" and 5 being "I can probably build a car from
scratch if I have the right documentation, and I'm resourceful enough
to
do some research and find some of my own answers." I need to know this
as some of the 'less traveled' roads will require you to make
modifications that in some cases I haven't performed myself yet and
based on this response it will help me to know whether this type of
solution is for you or not. I challenge you to 'stretch yourself' a
little bit. You won't ever learn anything (about yourself and your
abilities) if you don't try to do things that you're not quite sure you
can do... and then find that you can."

Default BTDT on plug and play efi on a 20vt

Answers to your questions:

---

I like 034 as well (I run the stage IIC on my S6 AAN 20vt, and my v8 twin turbo coupe quattro). I wouldn't even consider megasquirt, its WAY old on hardware design. Have a look at VEMS if you are looking for a more 'DIY' system for less $$ than 034.

1. What year/make/model/engine/tranny? (Pretend your at the parts

me know that too.

-----

On my S6, its the stock 1995 Audi S6 AAN 20vt motor, with stock wide first 01E 5-speed transmission.

On the Coupe, its a PT code 3.6L v8 motor from a 1990 v8 quattro. Stock 5 speed tranny.

---
2. Are you looking to control fuel only, ignition only, or fuel and
ignition?

---

I run fuel and ignition control on both cars.

------
3. What are the engine details (type, number of cylinders, previously
fuel injected or carb'd?)
-------

AAN is 5 cylinders, previously fuel injected, DOHC 20v turbo modified with a garret 3071 turbo and various other external mods (engine internals are all stock)

v8 is.. well.. 8 cylinders, PT code, previously fuel injected and distributor based ignition, now I run coil on plug distributorless ignition on it with a pair of T3-60 turbochargers.

----------
4. What type of ignition system does your car run- where is the crank
angle sensor (CAS) or distributor trigger wheel and what type is it
(Optical/LED Sensor? Hall Sensor? VR Sensor?)
-----------

On both cars I run a modified harmonic damper with a machined 60-2 wheel mounted to the pulley and a VR type sensor pickup to read the teeth. Both cars have the ability to run sequential injection (eg cam indexed) but I've been too lazy to hook it up so as a result I'm running wasted spark on both cars. If I chose to use them, both cam sensors are hall type.

------------
5. How many teeth/windows/slots and what orientation does the CAS,
crank
trigger, and/or distributor wheel have? (any missing? all evenly
spaced?)
------------

both cam signals are single window, and ~15 degrees BTDC... IIRC.

crank is 60-2, eg 60 teeth, with 2 of them flat to reference TDC.

------------

6. Is there a distributor? Single/Multiple Coils? Coil on Plug?

------------

on the S6 no (The cam sensor is a shutter wheel connected to the back of the cam gear), on the V8 yes, but it isn't used as I mentioned before.

-------------
7. Does this engine have a fast idle valve? If so, how many wires are
connected to it? Do you know if it is an on/off, pulse width modulated,
thermal, or stepper type?

---------------

On both cars, yes. Both are PWM type.

---------------
8. Rate yourself 1-5 on technical confidence in yourself.
---------------

Hopefully you can figure that out from the content, but I'd rate myself reasonably knowledgeable on standalone EFI.

3. 5 cylinder turbo variagated
4. 60-2 toothed wheel on crank pulley and hall sensor but rather run on the flywheel with stock sensors.(do that and you have something)

Default James, trigerring from the stock flywheel location is possible

Not with 034 yet (although I'm looking long and hard at the new 60-2 flywheel for 01A/O1E tranny setups that they offer for when my clutch finally decides to give out).

VEMS can do it, tho:

Default Looks like they're closer but still not a 100% out of the box hookup to factory sensors

034 has also got their IIC to run off the flywheel.

Default not with the production firmware

for running stock flywheel trigger AFAIK.

On the VEMS front, I just noticed this in their webstore. Very interesting...

Default Wow... Thats pretty slick.

So I take back what I said. They are pretty much plug and play using the stock wiring harness. Thats VERY cool.
