You got a mix of a few things. Your valve seals are shot so you're burning oil, and the lower oil level, mixed with a weaker (older) oil pump has run those lifters ragged. My car burns an assload of oil from bad seals I just haven't gotten around to fixing it. Hell, I just got my riding mower working again after tons of engine problems - haven't got to the car yet!
My suggestion is to keep your oil level as high as you can on the "full" line of the dipstick and check it constantly. Run a thicker oil for now - that seems to keep mine quiet - but they let me know as soon as the oil gets down. The lower your oil pressure is, the harder it is to keep those lifters pumped up. If the lifters were new, low oil pressure wouldn't be AS big of a deal (it would stil be an issue) but these are tired, old lifters! So it's a combination of a few things. If you're going to change the lifters you might want to consider doing the valve seals too. Although this will take more time and labor, it's well, well worth it if you plan on keeping the car. If I do mine, I'll probably end up just getting the head work done at the same time. Hope this helps.
