If your car has been converted to R134a refrigerant it should have a blue cap on the low pressure fitting and a red cap on the high pressure side. Not sure about the location on B4's but, on B3's the low pressure is right on top of the compression on the lower left side of the engine (passenger side) it's a pain in the butt to deal with if the engine is hot. The high pressure is on the same side but at the core support next the the left side of the condessor and radiator.
Charging for shade tree mechanics is pretty easy and is done through the low pressure fitting. If your going to do it your self spring for a hose with a built in guage that can screw onto any refrigerant / leak sealer / ester oil can. Also, and this is the pain in the butt part, the car needs to be running with the a/c on full blast when charging. It's like a revolving door inside the compressor, if it's no turning you can't get the regrigerant in. One mor thing, the guage will not give you a correct reading when the system is off.
Lastly if your car has not been changed over from R12, take it to a professional. They will pump the system down (ie. put it under vacuum) and evacuate any crap thay may be inside the system and retro fit you with the new/different fittings for R134a.
Good luck...<ul><li><a href="http://www.id-usa.com/">http://www.id-usa.com/</a</li></ul>

I have my b4 90 for over six and a half years and whenever I called "professional places" I got the
"well if your system needs recharging then there is a leak and...inspection $150, test charge $70, and most probably there will be some labour and parts for the replacement of the defective parts"
Any way I finally met a friend of a friend who does AC's and he said that most AC systems leak a bit but that I should just fill it up and see...so I did and for $50 of R12 and his time I have a fully working AC.
good luck
