alright, we have an 88 90fwd, i have everything apart, cv joint out of the hub but i can't get the thing to budge off of the spindle. I have hammered this thing till i was sore. whats the deal? the link on audiworld is not my car, the later cars are alot more easier then this crap. I do not have a bolt, just a nut that held it on. luckily my brother had a puller or i wouldnt of even of been able to get the shaft out of the strut assembly. I can't get the inner shaft out either because audi decided to use hex bolts that rust, and strip and make life miserable. I managed 3 out, 3 are now shot. so what do i do now besides pack it up and drop it off at a dealer and let them mess with it?

My 5k has that same thing. What you got is a ring on the inside of the CV holding it on. you will need to take the shaft completely off the car to get to it.
You need to peal the boot back to get to this ring. Clean off the grease and you should see an indent right next to the shaft on the CV. The lock ring has two tabs that you will need to squeeze together, once together then tap the CV off. Your kit should of came with one if you are doing a boot replacement.
Unless you are trying to do something else this is what I can say.

boot is peeled back, removed as much grease as i could but i dont see the circlip since schematics show it on the inside where you can't get to it. i can see the metal retainer (new one of those in the box also)
i have a bentley for both my 88 and 94 and they rather skip over that entire section about how to get it off...they show you once its off sure, but not how to. at this point if i could get the cv off without taking the driveshaft out it would be easier since it doenst look like my last 3 are going to come out unless i cut them off, then i will have to drill them out. this is the older more difficult cv joint it seems

does the new clip have tabs on it or is it a circle that is cut on one side?
If it has tabs on it try rotating the CV and look between the spokes.
Otherwise you could try tapping it in and then back out to see if it would break the seal it made.

the manual only shows a circlip that you can get to once you hammered the cv off. i can see where it is as but its at the end of the shaft so basically you just have to hammer it off to get to it. new (b4) you use a bolt it looks like that pulls the cv off of the driveshaft making this alot easier. had a fun pre-cleanup before i started the job since the mos2 grease was flung all over the rotor, wheel housing, brakes, rims...what a mess.

if as things show you just need to get the cv off of the driveshaft i am curious just how hard you have to hit it. I am trying not to damage it but seriously, this thing is like welded on i swear

it looks like everything is in order..they show the metal spacer thats designed to come off but thats like welded on also, then the plastic retainer, and circlip. it looks in order, what i really need is a haynes since they give a good breakdown and a step by step. bentley assumes your a certified audi mechanic and just need a quick "mind jog", when you run into a problem.
maybe i should go rent an air chisle?

maybe try to hold back the shaft and pry the joint off using a long wooden lever or something similar. That's the best i can suggest without taking it off. Good luck and sorry i couldnt help anymore!
