Default Motor Options HELP!(more)

So heres the deal. i got this 90 coupe quattro. I have been getting a lot of input from a lot of different people as to motor choices so heres what i wanna know...

Can i turbo the 20v motor that is in there? will it give me good reliable power?

Should i get a 10v turbo motor and build that (out of a 4k or 5k)?

Should i get a 20v turbo motor out of like an s4?

give me pros and cons for each, im not on an unlimited budget but this 20v is toooooooo slooooow for me. i want somewhere between 300-400 hp eventually.

TIA

Default all options

To turbo your 20v NA motor the compression is not ideal for forced induction. You can check out a few guys cars over on www.motorgeek.com where they have machined things or used different pistons or mix and matched from different turbo and na motors.

You could also do a 10vt like I'm doing. The motors are cheap and bullet proof.

With either of these options you will most likely want to run efi. The CIS is clunky and unless you really know what you are doing you probably wont have much success.

If you go 20vt from an S4 you could use that harness and use the motronic efi which works just fine.

But first things first, wander over to motorgeek to talk to lots of guys doing the same thing you want to do.

This is from my knowledge, but if you search the archives you will find lots of information. Here is one example Ultimate Swap Thread

Turbo the current 20V: It has been done, but is quite rare and you will probably have emmission issues. Look for CGT20VT in the 4k/cgt forum.

10VT from early 200 and 5000: IMHO I feel this is the best bang for the buck. Engine(with management?) can be purchased quite cheap($700?) and are easy to find. With a good engine management, you can see quite impresive torque and hp numbers. See cuatrokoop and toxcheap

20VT: the is a masterpiece with different variation seen in the late200 S2, urS4, RS2. This is big bucks. Engine alone(with managemant?) could cost you at least $2500. Then you have installation. With this you can see insane hp and torque. Basically the sky is your limit.(dont take this too literally). Stage I installation with a popular Audi tuner is $11,000. Soo many sites to list

Default I would suggest 20v turbo from either a 200q20v or S4/6...

depending on your budget. Having done the 20v conversion in a 90q20v I can highly recommend the 20v turbo, though the 10v turbo can be done for less.

The 20v turbo motor offers you factory installation parts ala RS2 and S2. It also offers you a guideline for installation since there are factory counterparts in Europe.

The 10v turbo motor offers you availability and lower cost of the motor. There were no factory 10v turbo 80/90/CQ's, but there are more than several 10v turbo converted cars in the US. Cuatrokoop (Eric), Toxcheap (Myke), and others are in the midst of these conversions and are always an enormous wealth of information. Note that these swaps do generally require a bit more custom work and ingenuity, though the 20v turbo swap can also require this depending on your budget as factory RS2 and S2 parts are somewhat expensive.

Honestly the world is yours and there are too many options, variables, and costs to list. There are also plenty of opinions on the subject. There are some simple facts though:

20v turbo flows more, is very tunable, has factory installation parts from Europe, comes with a highly compotent factory Motronic fuel system, but the cost will be more in most cases.

10v turbo flows less, is also quite tunable, does not have factory installation parts for the smaller chassis cars, comes with CIS (personally I hate it) but it can produce 200bhp with simple tuning and with Toxcheap tuning it can go much further, and the cost is less than that of the 20v turbo swap.

Now you can also go with a fully programmable fuel system with either motor to avoid wiring harness changes. You can also make your own motor with 20v and 10v parts, as we have seen Javad Shadzi made a 20v motor and is producing 400whp+, yowzers fast.

I love my 90q20v turbo, final cost was around $6k, though $1.2k were an intake manifold alone and I performed all of my own work. I can surely take it to 400bhp at the crank and will after the winter.

Don't forget you can also do a V8 swap which is becoming increasingly popular

Cheers,
