Default Which motor and why, 10vt or the 20vt in my 80Q

Asking the guys on the fourm
Which motor would you perfer in a 80/90Q
I have the chance to pick up either a 1988 audi 5000 with the 10vt and 170 000 miles or a
1991 200qt with 155 000 miles
Which would be easier to swap (bolt in)
I drive my cars really hard and expect things to break, because of this should I buy the 10vt because its so common or is the 20vt because it bullet proof
Let me know, I looking for about 280hp
I know both of them car produce this but what do I have to do to the 10vt to make this kind of power
Please let me know which one you like and why?
Thanks
YOSH

Default Some answers

Well with the 10vt to get a stable 280hp you would have to drop the CIS system and get an independent fuel system (034efi) being the most popular I believe. You could use the CIS system for a good 250hp i believe but over 300 you would be hard pressed, + it is very difficult to tune etc.

If you get that 20vt from the 91 200 you would be looking at an EFI system stock and no CIS. You could still do 034 efi but the stock EFI is good as well and can be chipped effectivly etc.

Both engines are very relaible/bulletproof but the 20v can take higher HP. + IMO the 20v in the engine bay looks very sexy indeed.

Here are a few places with a lot of info on this subject:

Both motors are stout, IMO the 10V's stronger by design. Both will make similar power with similar components. They do it in slightly different ways though. The 2 valve head fills the cylinders a little better down low improving torque and the 4 valve has superior top end flow adding around 1000 rpm's of power range. So it's a preference thing the mangement on a 3b's better but a 034 efi equipped 10v could school it on the same turbo and configuration. The 20v does look the part though ;o)

Default It really depends on how much you are picking the cars up for...

and it really depends on you. Are into show or go?? Some are into saying, "I have a 20Vt" and not concerning themselves with the power, money or reliability. Sure the 10 isn't that pretty, but it's just as solid. Parts are cheaper for the 10V. If you break things, replacing or rebuilding the 10V is much easier.
The 20V could be swapped and slightly modded and the 280hp goal could be obtained. In 10V form, you would have to go EFI. If you went EFI and ran all other items stock, you could get about 250hp.
You may be suprised, but hp is addicting, and you will want more later. This is where my descesion comes. I would probably go 10V and EFI (034) The swap will be just as complex as the 20V, but the foundation will come out about the same. If later you want to get upwards of 375hp, the 10vt EFI will only need a new turbo and header/exhaust and intercooler and it would be cheaper to do that.

Thanks but the cost of the 03EFI is about $1000
I'm getting the 10vt for $50 hole car
I was going to rering and bearing it along with maybe a metal head gasket
Is it easy to setup the 03EFI
My brother is trying to build a maga squrit system for his e21 BMW but been really busy and has not started
Please let me know, which system would be better and which would be more reliable
Thanks for the advice and hope to hear from you soon

What year of 5K is the 10vT from? I would say the setup you picked would be pretty reliable. Not much people here play with 03efi. My suggestion will be to head over to www.motorgeek.com if you are seriously considering the setup. A lot of people over on that forum are very knowledgeable with dealing with the management system.

Megasquirt will be a batch fire on the 5cyl, and you retain the factory ignition system. Not ideal, but it gets the job done. 034EFI is sequential fire and can/does take over ignition duty (Stage IB is a nice starter system). It will be a better option when you decide that you want to run more boost with a better control of the ignition timing.

Default You mention how much you are going to be getting the 5k for...

but you dont tell us how much the 20vt Audi 200 is going for. If you dont end up buying the 5k I might just pic it up as a project car/daily driver...
