Default My blower motor blows

I noticed recently that when I have the air on full and then turn on re-circulate that the blower motor does not blow as hard as it should. Im about 10 degreees warmer in the vehicle than I should be. Its an 88 80 fwd thats been converted to R134. I removed the tray below the wipers to reveal where the small filter should be visible. First off, Theres no filter...you can just see the blower motor. More frustrating is that the air is being blown into the engine bay instead of into the cabin. To decrease heat entering the cabin, I connected the hoses leading into/out of the heater core thus bypassing the whole thing. It helped significantly. (Note...this is b/c my dumbass obviously didnt get the ductwork lined up perfectly when I did the heater core this past winter...but i didnt touch the blower). Is this right? Please help.

Sounds like the internal flaps of the heater box have malfunctioned?
