Check distributor, plugs, wires, coils, and ground strap(s) especially.
Then alternator, seems less likely though(?)
If electrical diagnosis fails to reveal anything, then maybe it's not choking but starving (which IMO would exhibit different symptoms), - check for vacuum leaks everywhere.

Or how are your wires, mine did some weird things when it was arcing to the intake. Thats easy to check in the dark by looking for little sparks jumping. HTH

looking through my bills the original owner broke down and it turned out to be the cam position sensor.
