My left CV boot is torn. Do I have to get a new CV axle? It doesn't click.

Probably best to change inner and outer boots on both sides. If one goes, they're probably all getting close.
Boots are about $25 apiece. So you're looking at a $100 job.

Howdy! It depends on how long the boot has been torn, how much grit has gotten into the joint. If it doesn't click and the bearing do not show any brassing it should be ok. Though you've gotta remove and really 100% clean the thing out, think several cans of brake cleaner, to make sure all the grit is out, then boot and grease.
Cheers,

Depends greatly on the shop/person performing the work! ;O)
Myself, I just change the boot.
Many shops prefer to change the entire axle with a rebuilt one.
So again it depends on who's doing the work! ;O)

or letting me inspect it after they clean it. Maybe it is too time consuming for them to clean it. The place where I got the oil changed discovered it and said they wouldn't replace just the boot. I don't know why this would be if it is possible to clean it well enough. I'm sure the axle is good. Maybe so they can charge more?
