Default My lovely evening......

Got started on the lovely project about 7:00 PM after work...

All I have to say is that I'd love to kick the **** out of whoever did the timing belt on this last. First off, there was no passenger bumper bolt. Gone. Numerous screws missing. Then I get to the belt. Of course, the reason I'm doing this is that the water pump started leaking - the idiots changed the belt and left the pump. The pump didn't show any signs of leakage, but then again, it has been a few days since I last drove it. The belt tension seemed awful loose. Even with slacking the belt evenly on both sides of the cam sprocket, I could slide the belt on and off the tensioner! The belt is a blue writing Audi belt, so I guess at least they used a good belt.

I decided to make my own crank tool, since I'm not bad at making various things with a welder, torch, and scrap metal. As soon as I fired up the torch to start bending the steel to accept the motor bolt (to lock) my Acetylene started to run low. I managed to get a tool made that still butted up against the snub mount bar/frame and worked like a charm to break the crank bolt loose. Still took alot of uuumph though, even though it was just done 30K ago, I still needed a four foot pipe on it. Tomorrow I'll have Acetylene again and I can finish fabbing the tool for a full crank lock.

Everything else so far has gone smooth other than that I can't get the power steering pulley bolts loose. They're really freakin tight and I don't want to strip them - I may end up taking a small amount of heat to them and then just repaint the pulley. I'm assuming there's no way around this and being that the water pump has probably has never been off, I figured these bolts would be tough.

The tensioner bearing was a *** bearing, just like my replacement. Is this OE or has it been replaced? Nonetheless, it spins a bit worn out, so I'm glad I replaced it. Anyways, here's some pics.

Skonick will take note to the fine use of Red Oak logs as a radiator support...

The tool. This is after the bolt was broken loose..

And you can see how gently it wraps around the tensioner. Scary :-/

Default I might abondon it.

I might be getting the Duke back for a second car - I've got a 20VT now, not really worried about the other car ;-)
