remember reading in the past about just getting a generic bosch O2 sensor. I believe they were roughly half the price of the oem unit. Is it a PITA to make the generic sensor work on my 96 A4 12v? Thanks Adam

Not sure on an A4, but the three wire sensor from Early 90's Ford Taurus works on earlier Audis, probably on yours. Make sure yours is a three wire, cut and match wires to your old connector, and remember your heatshrink to make it nice and pretty. LATERS,

If you have the 4 wire one, what I've heard is that you'll have to replace both-same-bank sensors at the same time not to have problems with fault codes. This is assuming you have 4 sensors total. Splicing is a piece of cake, it should take you 1 hour to do both sensors on that car or about 1 1/2-2 for all 4.
You'd be silly not to replace all the sensors in one go, otherwise you'll be replacing 1 sensor every 15k.
