More than likely it's a bent valve.
No compression... By this you mean you got 0 lbs out of it? Sounds like either a bent valve or a valve completely dropped. Not necessarily an engine rebuild at all. Worst case, some head work and new valve(s).

1 cylinder had absolutely no compression.
BTW: the car is up for sale. 105k miles. Excellent condion (except for the obvious problem)He is asking $2,000 firm If I had the $$$, I would buy it myself and have it fixed (I really miss my previous 90).

Well, first you gotta find the problem.
Heads gonna have to come off no matter what. From there, you'll find it'll either be the valve, or a massive headgasket leak, which I'm sure you would have been aware of. I've seen very very very odd occasions of busted cams on some overhead cam engines, but not yet on anything VAG.
Once the heads off and you determine whether it's a bent valve or dropped valve, take it to a local machine shop, they'll fit you with a new valve, guide, or whatever else you need.
