ok, ive been wondering for a while now, what this stupid thing is, but havent been able to find any info on it, just connects to the vacuum line that goes to brake booster, and to the engine, between plugs number 2 and 3(counting from the front of the car) the guy that looks a little bit like a metal mushroom with a flat top, in the top pic ya can see the i dunno? 2 inches or so of vac line that connect it to the tee, that goes to I.M. and Brake Booster

Default That is.....

The vacuum pump. It helps maintain the vacuum for the brake vacuum assist. When you are doing a lot of heel & toe shifting along with much braking (think racetrack) the manifold vacuum alone may prove insufficient and in Audi's wisdom they provided the pump as an extra vacuum source. Most people don't need it for everyday driving, and in fact if you are having 'lifter noise' it might be caused by the cam follower which drives the pump. Some people (myself included) have even removed the noisy cam follower thereby eliminating one more source of engine noise. Simply remove the bolts, pull it away from the side on the head, pull out the can follower (it about ½" in diameter and 3" long) and the re-bolt it back on. Noise gone permanently and you can replace the follower any time you want later.
