Does anyone know where I can go online to get a stock replacement center muffler for an '89 80, non quattro? Also, what would be the effect of just taking out my old rusted one and getting a pipe to go straight thru to the last muffler? Thanks!!!

Judging by the size of the centre muffler when I had it taken out of my 90 (for a custom stainless system
), it would be loud - might even sound nice... anyone done this?!
Eurocarparts.com (link below if you are feeling lazy!) tend to be the best bet for OEM kit in the U.K. Be warned, they have a reputation for getting things wrong although their prices are very good... also, I've found that their website tends to be fairly useless for finding things so give them a call... there is also a PDF file of their Audi catalogue you could download which is better - sorry, I don't seem to be helping!!
If you are in the U.S., perhaps try German & Swedish parts @ www.germanparts.com...
Happy shopping!

Then see if the noise level bothers you. OEM mufflers are difficult to find, and usually very expensive. Any "good" replacement of simular size will do.
Any local muffler shops in your area?

If you are out of the U.K. and have no other luck, I'm sure these guys export... (Euro Car Parts)
If it is too small to read clearly, simply copy the image and paste it into a photo editor (or word) and zoom...![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

My resonator(center muffler) went bad about a year ago on my 4cyl 80. I had em cut it out and weld a straght pipe in place for $35. It sounded alright i guess, but would burble and break up above 2500rpm. The worst part is was the vibration it caused, it was really anoying. If you want some power have a good shop mandrel bend some 2.25" or 2.5" pipes from the cat back with a good rear performace muffler. If you want smooth and quiet just replace it. It dont have to be a stock resonator just a decent one.

When the cat is cold, it is really loud and shrill. Like the sound is echoing through the exhaust. But when the cat warms up, the sound is deep and sounds real nice, especially on the freeway. If you want to put up with the extra noise in the morning, it might be worth it to put a pipe in it's place. Just my experiance.
