Default New stereo install question...longish

Hello all, I just installed a new Blaupunkt San Diego CD HU (on '88 90Q), and ditched the amped rears in favour of Pioneer 5 1/4's. The sound is pretty good for a cheapie system, *BUT*, I am getting intermittent crackling from the speakers when the volume is turned a fair bit up. My observations are that with the bias at full front, the cracking seems to go away, but is present at split or full rear bias, suggesting rear speaker wiring problem?
Of note, I hooked up each rear to the seperate ground wire that was present, but these 2 grounds join somewhere along the way to the HU, and of course there is a single ground wire for the rears at the HU, which I attached BOTH HU rear ground leads to. Is this the problem? Has anyone had a similar experience?

PS: if ur looking for a low cost HU, the San Diego is $US95 at etronics.com, and matches the interior so well you have to see it to believe it. (red lighting w blue display, and the plastics are an uncanny match)

Default If you used the stock wiring they're too thin for higher output HUs.

I suggest rewiring not only the speakers but the crappy tiny power/ground leads for the HU also. I had some clipping going on before I re-did all of the radio wiring. -It's pretty easy to run wires down the door trim etc. took about an hour for me.

Default Did you say those speakers have a common ground?

I have never heard anything good about common speaker grounds (Most say NEVER!). I would say not to use stock wiring for new speakers, and to directly wire every inch from the back of the HU to each speaker. I have done quite a few stereo installs and re-installs, and have never blown an HU and have never been disappointed with the results. Good luck, and enjoy the system!

...on the left side there is a brown/black ground and on the right a brown/red(?) ground, and according to bentley they connect to single solid brown somewhere before HU, which I wired both rear ground leads to... sounds like I erred by using the stock wiring...I'll have to keep the volume down until next weekend then :-)

it's because the signal is too strong, rear speakers receive a line level from the hu then ampify it
