Re: Excessive air in the coolant system would cause the car to overheat more easily...
Audi did the original ones as the PO took it to Audi, he said it was in the spring, the folowing fall the problem was still there and he decided to live with it as it was out of warranty. When I got the car I put on a timing belt with another water pump and thermostat, original Audi thermosat, aftermarkt pump. hole at the top of the stat. The pump and old stat looked fine and checked out fine when I checked the stat opening temp, but as I say the car running temp is fine.

I had the same problem on my 93 w/ 2.8 V6
I had checked all the usual suspects as you have, water pump, t-stat heater core and so on. Didn't quite fix or find a problem. I found that with the engine idling there was no flow through the heater core (pulled hose at firewall). Well i could not find the cause i did find a solution. I plumbed in a electric water pump to the heater core hoses. Audi and VW seem to like to use them in the late nineties, the on e i used was for a VW Eurovan i believe Bosch P/N 0 392 020 024. Since putting in solid heat regardless of engine speed.

Thanks Mike , that might be the ultimate solution ,
Hoe did you control it ? I have manual heating so ther is no control for this , did you rig up a seperate switch to turn it on and off ?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I just thought, you don't need a switch
As the pump is suppose to be runnign coolant at all times anywy I may as well hook it up to and hot wire with the ignition on. did you run it through a relay ?

update
years on and I still have the same issue .. the coolant pump I put in didn't really solve it either. I might take it out ..I know putting a piece of cardboard in front of the rad may fix it but i shouldn't have to do that ..
oh well...

Well here we are years later again and i still have the same issue .. just checking in to see if there have been any revelations. Good news is I still have the car .. take the hoses off and there is just no movement throught the core at idle .. seams to be a fairly common problem these days any one have any more suggestions ?
