Default Could be that the starter isn't turning the engine fast enough

I had the same problem with my CQ and replaced several parts and spent a ton on diagnostic shop time. It turned out the starter was on it's way out. It finally died from all the cranking and when I replaced it the problem disapeared. There is a min cranking speed before the ECU will fire the coil. My starter didn't seem to be cranking too slowly, but that fixed it.

Default but if you pop the dist you can make sure the rotor is turning....

sure you can pop the oil cap, but that doesn't prove the gear on the dist is turning. I understand what you're saying and that is easier, but I would want a definite answer to rule out a no-start.
