Default are you sure conditions were controlled in both cases?

where all the lugs tight the first time around (w/o rings)? or tightened evenly for that matter? I dont see any reason why the wheel would or wouldnt shake depending on a stupid little piece of plastic...

Default all conditions were the same in both cases, alloy rings, not plastic in my case

car has hub size of 57 mm (I think) and wheel opening is like 75 mm. Rings are tapered to fit exactly against rotor. All I know is, they shook without the rings.

Default Yes I do.........My BMW which has factory wheels, also has tapered bolts,

back of wheel fits exactly to hub, to me it makes sense. I was talking to my mechanic the other day, he told me when he put new wheels on his car, he had the same thing....replaced every bushing, etc. or anything that he thought was even minutely loose only to find, when he put the rings on, all the shake went away.

Believe it or not, hub centric rings can make a big difference. Best to use them if needed.
