Default Now besides the point, my neighbor just blew the engine in his Golf VR6...

it was chain driven. Would it be posible to take the chain and somehow put it in my B4? He said I can take anything of it before he scraps the engine...

I don't think so. You have a V engine, the chain is probably too short to fit over the crank and both cams on your engine.

Converting the timing belt to a timing chain is probably doable, but this is not the way to do it.

Default Yeah, Audi makes really lousy engines.

IMHO, there hasn't been a decent Audi engine imported to the States since the 20vT.

BMW and Mercedes Benz use timing chains, WTF is the holdup with Audi?

p.s., the 3.0 V6 is underpowered. :-#

Default Immaterial

It's not the engine layout, it's the distance between the camshafts and the crank. The VR6 chain simply isn't big enough to fit on a Audi 2.8 V6.

Default It might make too much cense... to go to chains that is...

i think the benefits of a chain far outweighs the drawbacks...

Default Re: Yeah, Audi makes really lousy engines.

The reason why Audi uses belts is because they are quieter, transfer more power, and take less power to operate than a chain or gear drive.

Audi is using a chain drive on the new 4.2L V8 due to length restrictions of the B6 S4 and V8 Allroad (they had to redesign a whole lot of stuff actually). Otherwise, they would have used a belt.

Default I agree, but chains dont break, and destroy your engine while doing so...

so they're noisy, and put a little strain on the engine, I'd still prefer a chain anyday, and off the point a little, my mom, just broke the belt in her A4 2.8, with 48,000 miles...

Default Everyone has a weak link

If no one had a weak link, we'd all be driving our favorite cars with 555,000 miles on them. I prefer a chain too, hell I own a 22R Toyota truck with 469,000 miles on it. I changed the chain at 325,000 miles. Belts do offer less resistance, but Audi/VW for some reason makes their belts thinner and weaker than others. Climate also plays a role, but T belts are easy. Change them quick.
