Default Re: It might make too much cense... to go to chains that is...

The only drawback to a chain is that as it gets worn, your timing gets worse. Chains don't normally break, but gears do and tensioners go out just the same. Noise is not an issue, I'm sure Germans can figure out some way to add extra sound deadening properties to the chain cover. But zero point clearance will always be an issue whether its a chain or belt in a multi-valve engine. If it breaks, you're still screwed. LATERS,

Default Chain sucks. It is noisy ,heavyand needs to be lubricated......

why don't you check cost on chain replacment or just cost on resealing of the chain covers.Ask any nissan owner and he will tell you.
Audi timing belt on v6 and v8 engines is almost indestractable and the faliure of it is mostly caused bei defective water pump or puley.

Default Re: Yeah, Audi makes really lousy engines.

Belts are only quieter if you have some cheapo American car. I've driven a handful of BMWs and Mercedes and I never had problems with unpleasant engine noise.

Chains are better because they last longer, usually 150k miles or more. And when they are about to go, you can hear the chain getting noisier. Timing belts on Audi engines will let go without warning and will trash your engine.
