Every once in a long time, my dad's car starts up and most of the electrical stuff acts weird. The car runs smooth and strong, however the door chime beeps in a weak-sounding beep (though at the normal ~1 chime/sec) and at the same time the beep occurs, the tach needle jumps from 0 to 500, eventually works up to over 1000 then works normally(about a 10-15 minute process)! While this is happening, I don't think the headlights work, or any of the other electrical accessories (not sure about the seats, etc.) Has anyone heard of this problem before?

That says a different year range- my dad's is a 93 and the bulletin begins in 94- From what I have seen, though, don't they use the same switch? This link makes a lot of sense, and I am going to recommend he have that done. Also, is it a revised switch that won't work with the old lock cylinder/housing? Thanks!

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/6607/ignitsw.jpg"></center><p>Made from plastic, they tend to crack over time.
Plus their internals, made also of plastic, get heated, and warp out of position.
Mine, 1993, is identical to the ignition switch found on the 1994 & 1995 90's! I dont know why Audi didnt include the 1993's, but the switch in my 93 is the same part number as whats in the 94 & 95! The new switch I got from an Audi dealership, for $23, worked perfect! ;O)
From what I could tell the internals is what Audi changed, as the switch works slightly different from the old one. Namely its ACC position.
