Pressing the button freewheels the gears that run the trip meter. Plus when you press the button properly there is no way for the numbers to not return to 0 because each number has a plastic cam wheel that rides on a rod that is connected to the button. So the trip meter would have to stop at 0 0 0 0 if the gear was to break in that manner.

It actually happened to me. Started to push, part way down, click, then nada. Couldn't give the button a full push in and both the odometer and trip meter stopped working at that point.

hmmm I guess ours broke differently then, I'll keep looking and poking at it. $29 is quite a high price for something so small and simple. I am just looking for way to prevent it from happening again. I have determined through how mine broke that the replacement plastic gear will not break the same way the rubbery OEM gear did. My gear melted slightly on the inside and then bound to the shaft it was riding on.
