Default Odometer woes

My Odom hasn't worked in three years so finally last weekend decided to take it apart. Found that the two small soft plastic gears had teeth sheared right off. Got a used cluster and put the good gears in and still won't work! what else could it be? what could have stripped the gears. Anybody else have this problem?

Default odometer breakings are very common.

In fact, I just opened up to fix it. The little orange gear was missing a tooth.

http://www.odometergears.com/</a

I don't think it was that. I actually know the two previous owners. I worked with the previous owner for years and he doesn't know a thing about cars. He sold the Audi to me because he didn't want to spend money on a new exhaust and he felt it had high miles. So he sold it to me for 2 grand with only 124,000 miles, Yeah a rare model quattro for 2 grand in great cond.Apparently he didn't know that my VW "Audi" Quantum had 250,000 miles on it with no major probs. Hey his loss.

Hey thanks for the link! I have actually been to this site before and knew that the small gears could be a prob. They were broken. I have since replaced them and work fine but the unit still doesn't work. I read on that link you sent that the capacitors might be gone. I know very little about testing electronic boards but I do have some experience doing soldering and the like. How could I test it? Keep in mind I don't know a thing about diagnosing circuit boards. Thanks everyone!
